It is the end of 2024 and this means that the 12 month time period stated in the Electric Vehicle Charging Act which came into effect on 8 December 2023 has come to an end. The 12 month time period was for charging service companies that provided public charging will have to give users the option to pay via their credit cards or scanning a QR code instead of using the companies mobile applications or charge cards. This is for the convenience of all users island wide. This policy was put in place to regulate safe charging of electric vehicles (EVs) and aim to expand Singapore’s accessible charging network.
In order for charging service companies to be officially licensed, this is a condition that must be adhered to which comes into effect on 8 December 2023. Companies have 12 months to be fully compliant and licensed.
So what happen since then? The number of charging service providers have increased with some of them even exiting from the business due to the stricter regulations being in place. Charge+ has taken over 140 chargers from three companies, eChargz, QuickCharge and PacCom. These charging stations are located in 42 properties from a mix of condominiums and commercial buildings. Majority of these chargers are AC chargers ranging from 7kW and 22kW. These EV chargers have since been using the Charge+ interface to initiate charging which brings the total number of EV chargers under Charge+ to about 2,500.
At the end of October 2024, Singapore has 13,625 registered charging stations with 1,738 of them located in condominiums. There is a total of 28,464 EVs which make up of 2.9% of Singapore’s total vehicle population.
